About

Introduction

The Association for Late-Deafened Adults in the Greater Houston Area welcomes people who have lost some level of hearing later in life and fully-hearing individuals. Our fully-hearing family and friends are a big part of our support environment.

Our blog and wiki are open to the public with moderated comments to keep it family-friendly. Our group email is chapter@alda-greaterhoustonarea.org.

The Purpose (Mission)

  • To support the empowerment of late-deafened people.
  • To support the national ALDA goals described at:
    http://www.alda.org

These are our targets

  • No hearing aids in drawers!
  • Use of FM and/or Bluetooth for cell phones
  • Use of FM and/or CART and/or Telecoil for meetings
  • Use of open-captioning in sports events, plays

This is how we will grow

  • Meet monthly at the Deer Park United Methodist Church
  • Educate people about hearing loss
  • Discuss new technologies
  • Discuss communication strategies
  • Speakers to discuss audiograms and effects of drugs
  • Explanation of Texas DARS (Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services)

Objectives

Late-Deafened Adults are people who have lost the ability to understand speech with or without hearing aids after acquiring spoken language. ALDA is committed to providing a support network and a sense of belonging by sharing our unique experiences, challenges and coping strategies, helping one another find practical solutions and emotional support, and working together with other organizations and service providers for our common good.
